Ashtanga Yoga
A dynamic, structured yoga built on fixed sequences of postures linked to the breath.

The practice
What this class involves
Ashtanga is a dynamic, structured yoga built on fixed sequences of postures linked to the breath — the vinyasa. Developed by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in India, it follows a progression through six series.
The practice emphasises synchronising breath and movement, generating an internal heat that purifies and strengthens the body. Nothing is left to chance: the order of the postures, the number of breaths, the point of gaze.
Traditionally practised six days a week, Ashtanga demands discipline and consistency, and observes rest days: Saturdays, as well as full and new moons.
Rooted in Patanjali's "eight limbs" of yoga, it aims to bring body, breath and mind into harmony, leading to sharper concentration and inner peace.
Benefits
What the class works on
- Functional strengthBodyweight, repeated through the sequences, builds solid shoulders, back and core.
- The breath as metronomeEvery movement has its inhale or its exhale. The breath sets the intensity and makes the practice meditative.
- ConsistencyBecause the series is fixed, you measure your progress against the same map, week after week.
- ConcentrationDrishti (gaze point), bandhas (internal locks) and ujjayi breathing close your attention onto the mat.
Structure
How a session unfolds
- Sun salutations
Surya Namaskara A and B, to settle the breath and raise the internal temperature.
- Standing postures
The foundation of alignment: grounding, balance, opening the hips.
- Seated series
Working through the first series, adapted to your level, with the linking vinyasas.
- Closing
Finishing postures, inversions depending on level, then rest lying down.
